How to do it

You need: A clear space with a worktop or wall on one side.

Stand in a clear space with a worktop or wall within reach on one side. Make sure the floor is free of rugs and clutter.

  1. Take a few steps forwards at a normal pace.
  2. To turn, take several small steps in a curve, walking your feet round rather than twisting on one spot.
  3. Let your head and eyes lead the turn, looking where you want to go.
  4. Finish facing the other way with your feet hip-width apart, then walk back and repeat.

Form cues

  • The turn takes four or five small steps, not one or two big pivots.
  • Your feet keep clearing the floor, with no twisting or scuffing on the spot.
  • You feel steady enough that you could pause halfway through the turn if you needed to.

Common mistakes

  • Spinning quickly on one foot, which is a common way to lose your balance.
  • Crossing one leg tightly over the other during the turn.
  • Turning your feet while your head stays fixed - let your eyes lead.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, a near-fall, or new dizziness or leg weakness.
