How to do it

You need: A clear stretch of wall or worktop to walk alongside.

Stand tall beside a worktop or a long clear wall so you can trail your fingertips along it for support. Have your feet hip-width apart.

  1. Step sideways with your leading foot, about shoulder-width.
  2. Bring your trailing foot in to meet it, back to hip-width apart.
  3. Keep stepping the same way along your line, staying tall.
  4. Turn around or step back the other way to return.

Form cues

  • Your toes point forwards the whole time, not turning out in the direction you are travelling.
  • You stay upright, not leaning over the leading leg.
  • The steps are even and unhurried, with a clear moment on two feet between each.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your feet click together or cross over each other.
  • Bending forwards at the hips.
  • Rushing until the steps become a shuffle.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, a near-fall, or new dizziness or leg weakness.
