How to do it

You need: A kitchen worktop, sturdy chair or wall within arm's reach.

Stand next to a worktop, sturdy chair or wall so a firm surface is always within arm's reach. Bring your feet together so they are side by side and touching.

  1. Stand tall with your arms relaxed by your sides.
  2. Look straight ahead at a fixed point.
  3. Hold your feet-together position as still as you can, breathing normally.
  4. Reach for your support and step your feet apart to rest between goes.

Form cues

  • Your weight is even between both feet and spread through the whole foot.
  • Your body stays tall and relaxed, not stiff and braced.
  • Small sways at the ankle are normal and are part of the exercise.

Common mistakes

  • Standing in open space with nothing to grab if you lose your balance.
  • Looking down at your feet instead of ahead.
  • Holding your breath - keep breathing steadily throughout.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, a near-fall, or new dizziness or leg weakness.
