How to do it

You need: A worktop or hallway wall to walk alongside.

Stand at one end of a clear hallway or beside a worktop, with a wall or firm surface close on one side for support. Pick a straight line on the floor to follow, such as a floorboard join or a strip of tape.

  1. Step forwards, placing your heel down directly in front of the toes of your other foot.
  2. Shift your weight onto that front foot and find your balance.
  3. Bring the back foot through and place its heel just in front of the new front toes.
  4. Continue along your line, looking ahead rather than down.

Form cues

  • Each foot lands almost touching the one in front, on the same line.
  • You pause briefly with each step rather than rushing to the next.
  • Your eyes are up, using the far end of the line as a target.

Common mistakes

  • Widening your steps out to the side to make it easier - keep them on the line.
  • Looking straight down at your feet, which makes wobbles worse.
  • Speeding up until the steps blur together.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you have a fall, a near-fall, or new dizziness or leg weakness.
