How to do it

You need: A mirror.

Sit comfortably in front of a mirror in good light, close enough to see both sides of your face clearly, and let your face rest in a neutral position before you start.

  1. Bring both lips forwards and together into a pucker, as if to give a kiss or whistle.
  2. Watch the mirror and keep the pucker centred, not pulled towards the stronger side.
  3. Hold the rounded shape for a few seconds.
  4. Slowly relax your lips back to neutral.

Form cues

  • keep the two sides even; move the weaker side only as far as it can match the stronger side; never force
  • The pucker points straight forwards and looks symmetrical.
  • Your cheeks and eyes stay relaxed.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the pucker slide across to the stronger side.
  • Pressing your lips together hard instead of rounding them forwards.
  • Rushing between repetitions without relaxing.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you develop new facial twitching or tightness, or movements start happening in more than one area at once (for example your eye closing when you smile).
