How to do it

You need: A mirror.

Sit comfortably in front of a mirror in good light, close enough to see both sides of your face clearly, and let your face rest in a neutral position before you start.

  1. Look in the mirror and note whether one eyelid tends to close less fully than the other.
  2. Softly close both eyes at the same time, as if drifting off to sleep.
  3. Keep it gentle - do not screw your eyes up tight or force the lid down.
  4. Hold the soft closure for a few seconds, then slowly open both eyes together.

Form cues

  • keep the two sides even; move the weaker side only as far as it can match the stronger side; never force
  • The closure is soft and light, with no hard squeezing.
  • Your mouth and cheek stay still while your eyes work.

Common mistakes

  • Screwing the eyes up tightly instead of a gentle close.
  • Letting your mouth pull up or sideways as you close your eyes.
  • Pressing on the eyelid with a finger to force it shut.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if you develop new facial twitching or tightness, or movements start happening in more than one area at once (for example your eye closing when you smile).
