How to do it

No equipment needed - just a bit of space.

Sit or stand tall with your shoulders relaxed and your eyes looking straight ahead.

  1. Slowly turn your head to look over one shoulder, keeping your chin level.
  2. Go only as far as feels comfortable, then pause for a moment.
  3. Slowly return your head to face the front.
  4. Repeat to the other side, moving at the same slow pace.

Form cues

  • Your chin stays level - you turn it, rather than poke it forward.
  • Your shoulders and upper body stay still and facing forwards.
  • The movement is slow and even in both directions.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the head further with a quick push at the end of the turn.
  • Hunching or lifting your shoulders towards your ears.
  • Turning your whole trunk instead of just your head.

Safety: Stop and message your physio if it brings on dizziness, pins and needles in the arms or hands, or a severe or unusual headache.
